Requiem Raises the Roof!

"The concert was superb and it was an honour to be there for the dedication of the plaques. It was fantastic too to catch up with faces from yester-year, some I hadn't seen for a very long time."

History was made at Hurst on a drizzly but bright St George's Day to sing Faure’s Requiem, from scratch - in a single day!

Hurst's Musical Director, Neil Matthews, conducted the proceedings and was joined by over 60 OJs and friends.

Alumni travelled from far and wide, some making a weekend of it in Sussex. It was lovely to see Robin Field-Smith (Red Cross - 1966). head chorister at Roger Griffiths' wedding, at the event and Geoff Fenwick (Martlet - 1985), who travelled from Yorkshire to take part having discovered his passion for music at Hurst

With breaks in the day, and an enjoyable buffet lunch in the Common Room, everyone was in fine voice for the performance which was a dedication ceremony of the plaques in memory of

Roger & Diana Griffiths (Headmaster 1964-1986 & Headmaster's Wife 1966-1986)

and

David Hughes (Master 1965-2000, Martlet Housemaster 1975-2000 & Second Master 1993-2000)

The choir were joined by a further 50 attendees for the Chapel Service and the day proved so successful that we are planning to run it as an annual event.

All photos of the day are in the Gallery.
