Marking the Start of Advent: A Service of Music, Light, and Reflection

On Sunday, 30th November, the Hurst College community gathered in the Chapel for the annual Advent Procession, a service steeped in tradition and symbolism, overseen by our Chaplain, Dr Janneke Blockland. The Director of Music, Neil Matthews, led the choir who delivered a moving performance that set the tone for the season of reflection and anticipation.

The service took place after a reception for members of the Foundaiton and the congregation from Holy Trinity in Hurstpierpoint. A number of alumni attended, including a family who travelled from the US who had celebrated Thanksgiving with their family in the UK the day before, and enjoyed celebrating the Advent season with the Hurst community.

The Advent Procession has its roots in early Christian tradition, originally observed as a time of fasting and penance. Over the centuries, it evolved into a more celebratory season. Today, the service remains rich in meaning, with the Advent wreath at its heart—four candles representing the themes of prayer, penance, preparation, joy, and hope. The procession itself, moving through the Chapel with candles, symbolises the journey from darkness to light as Christians prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ.

As we enter Advent, this service reminds us of the values of faith, hope, and community that lie at the heart of Hurst life.
