The Hurst Foundation welcomed SPS and Senior School parents for a truly memorable Burns Night celebration, filled with warmth, tradition, and lively Scottish flair.
Guests entered through the cloisters to the stirring sound of live bagpipes, setting a wonderfully atmospheric tone for the evening. A welcome drinks reception followed in the Common Room, where parents gathered to greet old friends, meet new ones, and enjoy the start of the event.
We then made our way to the Dining Hall, beautifully transformed for the occasion. Our superb catering team delivered an exceptional three‑course Scottish‑themed supper, which was met with enthusiastic praise from all who attended.
Following the starter, parent Simon Cowan delivered a spectacular Address to the Haggis — a powerful and entertaining performance that captivated the room. The evening continued with poetry readings from Head of College, Dominic Mott, and Director of Music, Neil Matthews, each adding their own charm and energy to the celebrations.
After the main course, Cameron Allan, Head of Fifth Form and English Teacher at Hurst, delivered a moving and thoughtful Immortal Memory to Robert Burns, offering a heartfelt tribute to Scotland’s national poet and the enduring relevance of his work.
The festivities continued with a top‑class ceilidh band who had guests on their feet in no time. Laughter, lively dancing, and plenty of joyful missteps filled the hall as parents embraced the spirit of the evening with gusto.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for such a fantastic night of culture, connection, and celebration. We very much look forward to Burns Night becoming an annual tradition at Hurst.
