1849 Society
Hurst was founded in 1849 by Nathaniel Woodard, and it is that year which gives its name to our giving society. The 1849 Society is for those who choose to support our bursary programme with a regular gift, by direct debit, monthly or annually.
Members give £18.49 a month. Over five years, that gift builds to £1,109.40, and with Gift Aid, to £1,386.75. If 100 people joined the 1849 Society, that would mean over £138,000 committed to bursaries within five years.
A regular gift, however small, gives the bursary programme something invaluable: certainty. It allows Hurst to plan ahead and commit to pupils for the whole of their time here, rather than relying on one-off support alone. Every member of the 1849 Society plays a direct part in making that possible.
Members receive an annual newsletter keeping them up to date with the bursary programme and the pupils it supports, a bespoke 1849 Society lapel pin, and an invitation to an annual dinner hosted by the Head of College.
