OJ Pavilion 'Old Father Time' Weather Vane

Donated by OJ Club in commemoration of the many years of service to Hurst of Derek Semmence who, for many years, was groundsman and cricket professional.

Though the OJ Pavilion is a memorial to the fallen of The Great War, it was felt by OJ President Ian Buckeridge that a weather vane would not only enhance the pavilion but be a meaningful reminder to generations of OJs of their late friend, Derek Semmence. In 1974 Derek became the cricket professional at Hurstpierpoint and gained a reputation as a popular, impassioned teacher with an ability to bring out the best in a boy. Within a few years he had started to take the cricket team on tours to India

With the Headmaster's permission on completion of appropriate structural surveys etc, the Old Father Time weather vane, based on that most famously on the pavilion at Lords, was arranged and in place in time for the start of the 2022 summer term and cricket season.
